Safflower XVI-2

Wireworms

Gary L. Hein

Wireworm larva.

Wireworms will attack the germinating seed and young seedlings. Rotations that include cereal crops are more likely to develop wireworm problems. Stand reduction from wireworms is usually irregular with spots of severe reduction. Planter box seed treatments containing Lindane would be effective at reducing damage from wireworms if they can still be obtained. Seed treatment with Cruiser will also control wireworms, but at a substantially added cost.
