As with Banks grass mite, thrips exit maturing wheat and infest the margins of adjacent fields planted to proso millet. The symptoms include yellowing of the leaves in no particular pattern, similar to virus symptoms in small grains. If the thrips feeding is severe and the crop is stressed, the leaves will turn brown and die.
Insecticides labeled on millet expected to be effective against thrips include Mustang MaxR and Tracer, although no efficacy data are available. See labels for rates and other details.
