Lygus bugs

Sue Blodgett & Greg Johnson

lygus bug

Adults measure about ¼ inch in length with a distinctive light colored triangular marking on its back.  Both immature and adult lygus bugs feed on growing points, buds, flowers and green pods with their piercing sucking mouthparts.  Toxic saliva, injected while feeding, causes blasting of buds and shriveled seed.  Yield losses from bud blasting and damage to seed has been estimated as great as 20% during severe outbreaks in Canada.

Economic thresholds in Canada are 15 lygus per 10 sweeps in bud stage through petal fall.  After petal fall the threshold increases to 20 lygus per 10 sweeps.
