Sugarbeets XX-21
Introduction - Sugarbeets Diseases
Eric D. Kerr (Revision by
Robert Harveson, Barry Jacobsen, Martha Mikkelson, February 2002)
Diseases of sugar beet are costly production problems in the high plains and
intermountain regions of Colorado,
Nebraska, Wyoming,
and Montana. Root infecting
nematodes cause significant reduction in sugar yield and root quality and occur
in most sugar beet production areas. They are expensive to control and persist
in infested fields indefinitely. Rhizomania and curly top are serious virus
diseases in some areas and can result in devastating yield losses. Cercospora
leaf spot, Fusarium yellows, Aphanomyces black root rot, and powdery mildew
occur throughout most of this region and cause significant reduction in root
yield and sugar content. Rhizoctonia root rot results in significant yield
losses in all sugar beet production areas.
