Dry Peas

Grasshoppers

Sue Blodgett

Identification (and life cycle/seasonal history)

Pea is not a preferred host for grasshoppers, but grasshoppers can cause damage to field pea, especially to pea that is in the flower to pod-filling stages.

Both adult and immature grasshoppers are generalized defoliating pests that typically cause the most damage when the adult stage is reached.  Grasshopper movement into a cropped field from surrounding areas will result in greater grasshopper numbers, but damage on field edges will occur before the whole field is colonized.  If adult grasshopper populations are severe, then control efficacy is often related to the residual activity of the insecticide.

As with many crops, grasshopper control is advised whenever 20 or more adults per square yard are found in field margins or 8 to 14 adults per square yard are occurring in the crop.
