Two species of false root-knot nematodes attack sugarbeets and cause gall-like swellings on roots; Nacobbus aberrans and N. dorsalis. False root knot nematodes have a broad host range, including broccoli, cabbage, carrot, pea, and other vegetables. Several weeds including kochia and lambsquarter are also hosts.
False root-knot nematodes cause large cavities that extend into the stele that induce necrosis and gall-like development on roots.
No biological control strategies have been developed for false root knot nematode.
Do not return tare soil to sugarbeet fields. Control weeds in and around fields and irrigation canals. Practice a two year or longer crop rotation to nonhosts such as dry beans, small grains, corn, potato, or alfalfa. Plant early when soil temperatures are low.
