Field Corn

Dingy Cutworm

Frank B. Peairs

Cutworm Adult

Cutworm Larva

Identification (and life cycle/seasonal history)

Larvae have a dull, dingy brown body with mottled pigmentation.  A broad gray stripe runs along the back with light gray V-shaped patterns on each segment.  Fully developed larvae are one to 1? inch (25 to 32 millimeter) in length.  The forewings of the adult moth are dark brown with bean-shaped markings.

Plant Response and Damage

Larvae feed primarily above ground on leaves and only rarely on stems.  They may cut off plants at or just below the soil surface.

Management Approaches

Chemical Control

Early detection of their presence is essential.  Cutworms are most prevalent in corn following sod, alfalfa, small grains stubble, or in continuous corn with heavy crop or weed residues. Consider treatment if one plant in 20 is injured and cutworms are present.  Crusting or dry surface soil can reduce control with some materials, which can be counteracted by rotary hoeing immediately before or after the application.  Pyrethroids have performed better without incorporation in most studies.  The effectiveness of current Bt corn hybrids is unknown.
