Sorghum XV-4

Corn leaf aphid

John B. Campbell

Corn leaf aphid

In the Northern Great Plains, the greenbug is the only consistent insect pest of sorghum. The corn leaf aphid is usually present on sorghum plants and may be mistaken for greenbugs, but it generally isn't economically important. The corn leaf aphid is a dark blue-green aphid and it does not have a stripe down the back. The head, feet, legs and cornicles of the corn leaf aphid are black. This aphid develops inside the plant whorl and usually disappears when the sorghum head emerges. Economic sorghum yield losses have not been recorded for the corn leaf aphid.
