Dry Peas

Armyworm

Sue Blodgett

Identification (and life cycle/seasonal history)

Climbing cutworms such as the army, dingy and darksided cutworms feed on above ground plant parts at night.  Army cutworms overwinter as larvae and so are present very early in the crop season and may injure seedling pea plants.  During the day they retreat to the soil and may be found by scraping the soil, especially at the base of the plant.  Visiting a field in the evening, at night or early in the morning with a flashlight can reveal the presence of cutworms. Most cutworm species occur early in the spring.  Damaging populations have been encountered, especially when there is moderate to heavy plant residue on soil surface.
